5 Quick Job Search Tips

Whether it’s week one or thirty-one, the job search is a new space to explore and learn more about yourself. Each of us has a very personal relationship with transitions. How comfortable we assumed we were with change may morph into overwhelming anxiety that was never anticipated. In fact, this may be the first time you’ve not been recruited or left a position in a burgeoning market. Know that you are not alone in experiencing a whole host of emotions and that having a plan can open other avenues for a renewed job search.

Document: • Is your resume up-to-date? Is your LinkedIn profile congruent with your resume? • Keywords, language, and proper formatting are crucial • Recruiters have minutes to review resumes and you don’t want yours ignored • If you have any doubts, hire a professional to create this all important document

Connect: • It’s the perfect time to renew old contacts and refresh your current network • Don’t assume people know that you are actively searching for a new position • Schedule coffee at mutually convenient times • Be prepared with a way this contact can be of help, aside from hiring you

Assess: • Are your skills current? Consider on-line courses or pursue an advanced certification • Is your field expanding or retracting?  Is it time to look beyond the familiar? • What other areas are you curious about? • What’s your “dream” job?

Volunteer: • Do you currently volunteer with an organization where you have a high profile? • Roles in membership or as a greeter, offer greater exposure to more people • Look for a new group to lend your skills to • This is an opportunity to make new connections and also contribute your skills

Get out of the house: • Isolation is depressing • On-line job search alone is the least effective way to land a position • Most jobs are found through personal connections/introductions • Block out time daily for a balance of calls, coffee, connection and self-care

And, however comfortable you assumed you were with change, you may experience unexpected pushback, making this the ideal time to engage the support of a career coach with experience in helping professionals achieve better, faster, results. At KICKSTART Your Transition we offer a broad range of services customized to fit your needs.
