No doubt you’ve heard that you do not have a second chance to make a first impression. These reactions occur quickly, and recent studies have shown that they can actually lock in as little as a few seconds. We can read people in person with a fuller picture, but Zoom is frequently the tool we are dependent on for meetings and interviews. We make quick judgments based on easily observable cues like appearance, posture, and verbal communications.
To make a good first impression, consider these tips:
Prepare Your Environment: Ensure your background is clean, uncluttered, professional, and has good lighting. Use a neutral or branded virtual background as needed.
Test Your Technology: Check your internet connection, webcam, and microphone before the meeting, and ensure that the audio and video settings are optimal
Dress Professionally: Wear attire appropriate for the meeting.
Engage with Body Language: Maintain eye contact, look at the camera, nod, smile, and show attentiveness and engagement.
Be Punctual and Prepared: Join the meeting a few minutes early, have the agenda ready, and ensure that you are familiar with the content being presented. For an interview, keep a copy of your resume handy for reference.
Practice in a mirror. Practice with friends. Small details go a long way to feeling confident and engaged, especially on Zoom.
