First Steps to Setting Career Goals

We all have dreams. How does this impact your professional life? Is there an intersection for your dreams to be fulfilled in your career path? Before dismissing this idea as entirely impractical or impossible, take a few minutes to really step into the dream. The questions below are a preliminary step toward discovering what your dreams are.

  1. What is your dream?

  2. Is your dream feasible? Can it become a career, a hobby or business?

  3. Are there any issues, medical/physical, that would make pursuing your dream unfeasible?

  4. Does following this dream require more education, time and/or money to achieve?

  5. Are any of your current skillsets transferable to your dream job?

  6. Are you financially able to pursue the dream using personal finances or student loans?

  7. Can you achieve this dream on a part-time basis while still working at your current position?

  8. What do you find “ideal” about your dream?

  9. How would you feel if you could turn your dream into a reality?

10.   Do you reflexively find anything negative about your dream? If so, why?

11.   Does anything about your dream scare you?

12.   Are you up to the change challenge?

13.  What support do you have in pursuing your dream?

14.  What’s your first step?

However comfortable you assumed you were with choice and change, it may morph into overwhelming anxiety that was never anticipated. This makes it the ideal time to engage the support of a career coach with experience in helping professionals achieve better, faster, results.
