Lately the topic on everyone’s mind is burnout. Are you feeling it? Do you see people around you exhibiting signs of it? How is this different than pre-COVID, or is it just more acceptable to discuss now?
According to Elizabeth Scott, PhD, burnout can leave people feeling exhausted, empty, and unable to cope with the demands of life. “Burnout may be accompanied by a variety of mental and physical health symptoms as well. If left unaddressed, burnout can make it difficult for an individual to function well in their daily life.”
Fortunately, there are ways to fight back in the workplace. Companies are anxious to work with employees to recognize stress and identify ways to support staff.
1. Discuss your goals and options with your manager or employee.
Prioritize and work together to plan a lighter load for improved work-life balance. What is one step you can agree to immediately?
2. Establish clear boundaries.
When working remotely, the distinction between work and a personal life can be blurred.
A healthy separation leads to better performance and overall health. Suggest a sign-off time when you will be unavailable to check e-mails or other communication.
3. Make your “office” environment more welcoming.
According to one study, people with a plant in their office or workspace reported experiencing 15% less stress. Adding family, friends or pet photos helps for a quick check-in. If working from home, be near natural light and even with limited space, designate an area for work.
4. Ask for help.
Every workplace is different, but there is a heightened awareness regarding stress and mental health for everyone. Enlist support from family and friends.
Employer/employee, we have all been thrown into space/place that’s been reconfigured from whatever we knew. How we adjust varies and support is essential. Asking for help may have been taboo in the past, however, there are no gold stars for burnout.
However comfortable you assumed you were with choice and change, it may morph into overwhelming anxiety that was never anticipated. This makes it the ideal time to engage the support of a certified coach with experience in helping professionals achieve better, faster, results. At KICKSTART Your Transition we offer a broad range of services to fit your needs.
