Everyone has their own way to process information and retention. There is no universal model. Classroom memories may have provided the learning framework that you’ve likely adapted to fit your adult style when presented with new data.
Educator Tom Senniger has revised the Learning Zone Model based on the original work of psychologist, Lev Vygotsy. This model also shares some features with Carol Dweck’s work on growth. Senniger posits that there are three zones we can be in regarding any activity.
· Comfort Zone: a safe place to reflect
· Learning/Growth Zone: where you grow and learn
· Panic Zone: learning is beyond the familiar and it’s difficult
The comfort zone is what we are used to. Our habits and behaviors are consistent with muscle memory and deeply embedded. In the learning zone there is an expectation that we will need more focus and brain power and there is also a chance that we might fail. In the panic zone, discomfort is high as is the chance for failure.
When the stakes are increased, as in the case for entrepreneurs, it’s not hard to enter a full-blown melt down. The business world presents multiple challenges and when there’s no one to call for a quick fix, it can be overwhelming.
Preparation is key and often where a mentor serves a unique role. A mentor is further along on their career path and has likely faced more situations than a new entrepreneur. An industry match isn’t as important as seeking out someone successful and relatable. Ideally the connection would have been established prior to a business launch, but it’s never too late. Business groups attract individuals at all stages of growth and may have an active list of experts available for consultation or mentorship. Whittle your learning curve down to size.
